This week, our group is focusing on researching and learning about the technology that we will need to use for our project. We have decided to use Unity as our application development platform because of our previous experience with it and its capabilities. To support the core functionality of our project, which is painting in 3D, we have found a 3D Unity package called "Print 3 in 3D" that comes with a painting interface. We are currently reading through the documentation for this package to prepare for the upcoming development of our project.

This week, we continued learning the Print 3d package. And started our application development. Each teammate is assigned a different task. We are developing a  3d room for the virtual shoe studio. We split the interface design into 2d UIs and 3d UIs. At the same time, we are looking for 3d assets that can be used in our application, such as the table, floor, wall, and most importantly, shoe models. On the 3d painting part, we successfully imported getting paint in 3d working for drawing on plane 3d objects with a pen. We also built a brand video to promote our project for the RIT Frameless Symposium.

Weijun and Annie created a demo application that allows painting on the airplane and changing the pens’ color. Annie, Yao, and Yibo came to the RIT Frameless Symposium and presented the demo VR app to users.  We received some valuable feedback and have made a plan for further app improvements based on what we learned. Overall, it was a productive week and we're excited to continue working on our project.

We met in Carlson and assigned tasks to each team member. We searched online and tried to find a way to paint on the shoe models we imported. In the main menu, we added the environment setting option, which allows the users to change the material of the table, floor, and wallpaper.

Based on the feedback we received from the symposium, we realized there are a lot of functionalities we need to change and improve. We first fixed the interaction button that allows the users to draw shoes using the index finger instead of the middle finger.

We designed the questionnaire based on the effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction measurements. We made the poster with Figma and printed it. We started to design our websites and upload weekly updates regularly.

On the 3D painting front, we've made some good progress. We made drawing on shoe work. To do that,  we found more shoe models online and imported them on blender. In the blender, we fixed the shoe texture and UV mapping. We then imported them into unity and hook up with the painting package to be finally able to draw on the shoes.

This is the final oral presentation week. We presented our VR app on Thursday. Based on the previous feedback people want to use more tools to draw on the shoes, and to be able to ease the shoe and modify only part of the shoes. For a better user experience and higher productivity, we built more functionalities, such as a sprayer that allows people more effectively coloring a large part of the shoe efficiently. We added an easer that allows people to undo their drawings. We also made the shoe more scalable to help people draw better on the shoe, and this functionality is controlled by a slider. In the main menu, we added a selection that allows users to choose different shoe models. We provided three shoe models, including sneakers, slippers, and sandals.

After listening to other groups’ presentations, we added a new functionality, a trash bin. It can recycle the unsatisfactory shoe design and generate a new shoe model on the table.

We invited 6 participants to try and evaluate our VR app. We delivered pre- and post-surveys for every participant. Before the real test, we explained how the controllers work. During the testing session, participants are instructed to complete two tasks, including setting up the environment and designing shoes. We collected the survey's responses and concluded the evaluation results. We improved our explanation for next week’s poster presentation based on the participants’ feedback.
